January 9, 2026 – Weekly Ways To Engage

The last couple of weeks, many of us paused to catch our breath, to mark the New Year, to be with family, and to steady ourselves for what lies ahead. But the reality is hard to ignore: the erosion of our democracy is accelerating, and the stakes feel more palpable by the day.

The year started off with the illegal attack on Venezuela, followed by threats to other countries, and then the horrific extra-judicial killing of Renee Good, an unarmed Minneapolis woman who posed no threat to the ICE officer who shot her. That reality only reinforces why we can’t disengage for long.

This weekend will be a Nationwide Weekend of Action: ICE Out for GoodIndivisibleAction Alaska, and a broad coalition of partners, have banded together for the nationwide ICE Out for Good Weekend of Action this Saturday and Sunday. There are events planned across Alaska this weekend, so be sure to check out Mobilize and March Against for events as they are posted. You can also check out Indivisible’s toolkit to host your own event this weekend.

Please find your way to both take action and take care of yourself, and read on for important upcoming events, and other ways to get involved in this week’s “Ways to Engage” series from Alaska Forward!

Priority Actions to Take

  • Get the word out about how the Trump Administration is affecting Alaska – you can find a running list of Federal actions affecting our state here
  • Sign the We Ain’t Buying It Pledge.- This holiday season, it’s time to put our money where our values are. It’s time to recognize the power in every dollar we spend or don’t spend. That’s why we’re calling on everyone who believes in justice, equity, and real community investment to take the We Ain’t Buying It pledge.
  • Demand that Congress Permanently Extend ACA Tax Credits – Congress must act immediately to preserve affordable health insurance for millions before costs skyrocket at the end of year. You can find ways to take action here
  • Stand With Trans Youth and Stand for Science – Sign this open letter from Alaska Health Professionals to the Alaska State Medical Board to strongly oppose the Board’s proposal to classify gender-affirming care for minors as “unprofessional conduct.” resolution labeling gender-affirming care for minors as “unprofessional conduct.”
  • Attend local rallies – Good Chants is a ready resource for any political action. In these tough times, chants and songs are important tools that can deliver powerful messages. A few well-chosen ‘sound bites’ can brighten and energize any event. Collected by Ruth Goldbaum, HFT Local 1018-R, AFT, AFL-CIO Hartford, CT, Goodchants.org is a regularly updated database, so check back for new additions! Copy freely and circulate widely. Have your own chant? send them to goodchants@yahoo.com.
  • Write a letter to the editor of your local paper – Check out Women Forward’s helpful toolkit for guidance. Letters to the editor are a long game, so if your letter isn’t published, keep trying and post it on social media and share it with your network. You can find more tips on how to write letters that really get attention here and feel free to contact us at info@alaskaforward.org if we can help in any way.
  • Require ICE to unmask and display clear identification – The Visible Identification Standards for Immigration-Based Law Enforcement (VISIBLE) Act of 2025 would strengthen oversight, transparency, and accountability for the Trump Administration’s indiscriminate and alarming immigration enforcement tactics that have terrorized communities across California and the nation. Send a letter to Congress now!
